What Is Embryo Grading?

Embryo grading is the laboratory process of evaluating embryos under a microscope to assess their developmental quality based on factors such as cell number, symmetry, fragmentation, and, in later stages, the appearance of the inner cell mass and trophectoderm.

Clinical significance

Embryo grading helps clinicians select embryos with stronger developmental characteristics for transfer or freezing. While grading provides useful information about embryo morphology, it does not guarantee implantation or genetic normality.

Common confusion

Patients often assume higher-graded embryos always result in pregnancy. In reality, embryo grading reflects appearance, not necessarily chromosomal health or implantation success.
