Gestational Carrier (Surrogacy)
A gestational carrier is a person who carries a pregnancy on behalf of intended parents using an embryo to which the carrier has no genetic connection. The embryo is created through IVF and transferred to the carrier's uterus.
How Gestational Carrier Arrangements Work
Intended parents create embryos through IVF using their own or donor gametes. A selected embryo is transferred to the carrier's prepared uterus. Legal agreements (Gestational Carrier Agreement) must be executed by separate attorneys for each party before any medical procedures begin. Parentage is established through pre-birth or post-birth court orders depending on jurisdiction.
Biological Constraints
The carrier must meet medical and psychological screening criteria. Endometrial preparation for the carrier follows the same hormone protocols as any FET cycle. Implantation rates in gestational carriers are comparable to those in intended parents of the same endometrial quality. The primary variables in surrogacy are legal, financial, and logistical rather than biological.
