Surrogacy Insurance Gap
A situation where the surrogate's insurance policy does not cover medical care related to a surrogacy pregnancy. When this happens, intended parents may need to purchase a separate maternity policy.
How it happens
Insurance companies can add exclusion clauses that deny coverage for pregnancies carried for another person. These exclusions may not be obvious until a claim is filed. The gap is discovered when the surrogate's insurer reviews the circumstances of the pregnancy and determines the arrangement qualifies as surrogacy.
Financial impact
An uncovered pregnancy can cost $15,000 to $30,000 or more in out-of-pocket medical expenses. If complications arise, costs can increase significantly. Identifying the gap early allows intended parents to arrange alternative coverage before transfer.
