What Is Sperm Morphology?
Sperm morphology refers to the size and shape of sperm cells, assessed as part of a semen analysis.
How Morphology Is Evaluated
Using strict Kruger criteria, a laboratory examines sperm under a microscope and classifies each as normal or abnormal based on head shape, midpiece, and tail structure. A normal morphology rate of 4% or higher is generally considered within reference range.
Why It Matters in IVF
Abnormal morphology may affect natural fertilization rates. When morphology is very low, ICSI is often recommended to bypass the need for sperm to penetrate the egg independently.
